Sunday Melee #4

This Sunday was my second time going to a local weekly Melee tournament. I still lost both my matches but I played a lot better than I did last week. I was actually wavedashing, doing short-hop lasers, jump canceling shines (which I’ve been working on recently) etc…

My first match was against a Peach.
I actually knew my opponent from school and he usually beats me. I did good taking the first stock quickly but it went downhill from there. I kept getting caught by his down-smash when I approached and wasn’t able to combo very well when I did get an attack in. I did manage to keep off Dream Land which was good but neither Fountain of Dreams nor Pokemon Stadium helped me very much. Even without the help of a high ceiling I was still having trouble getting KOs. Which brings up another point I need to work on: edge guarding. My edge game is pretty weak right now. I can maybe do a basic ledge-hog but not every time and trying to cover options when they’re recovering is difficult for me. Also, I’m not very precise in my aerials yet so if I do go for an attack on their recovery they can usually avoid it.

My second match was against a Marth He played aggressively using the side-B to rack up damage and I had trouble recovering and approaching. He was able to move in quickly despite my attempts at controlling the stage with short-hop lasers and I simply wasn’t able to keep up defensively with all of his movements. I really have to start working on my defensive tactics such as proper shielding and especially DI to get out of combos. Now I don’t want to john but I was hungry by the time I got to my second match cuz I hadn’t eaten before going to the tournament and I think I could have played better that match. I don’t think that’s why I lost because my opponent was definitely more skilled but I could have played better if I wasn’t hungry.
Unfortunately, my match didn’t get on stream this time so I don’t have a video. Maybe next week.

A friend of mine also suggested that I should try watching my opponent more than I watch my own character. That way I can analyze their movements and maybe get better reads on them. Cuz if I’m watching myself trying to confirm that I’m doing something I could miss a crucial movement my opponent is doing.
Takeaway from this tournament:

  • Eat before Smashing
  • Keep training

The Beginning

Hello everyone. I am an avid player of Super Smash Bros. Melee. I am still relatively new to the game having been playing seriously for only about 5 or 6 months. In that time though I’ve gone from having a casual interest in the game to having it become the hobby I spend the most time on.

For years I’d been at friend’s houses and played a game or two but I was never really into it. Then one day at school a friend of a friend brought me to the school’s game room and asked if I wanted to play Smash Bros. I said sure and he told me how to play (up until then I really had no idea what all the controls were). And so it began. Anytime someone brought in Melee I would be there. I got into it so much that I went on eBay and bought my own GameCube with a copy Melee so I could practice at home. And so I did. I watched videos on how to play and I began to improve and I continue to get better.

But I’m still trash.
